We Raised the Beds

We raised the beds 4

The beds are raised.  The garden beds that is. If you remember, back in February, I posted about raising a garden and building garden beds. You can go back here and read that post if you need to catch up.  In that post I showed you pictures of our dream garden. How we wanted it to look, etc.  Well, I’m happy to report that it is coming along nicely.

Lettuce in the trough.jpg

Green and Red Romaine Lettuce and Sweet Spring Onions in a watering trough purchased at Tractor Supply. We drilled drainage holes in the bottom, layered gravel in the bottom and then lined the trough with silt fence before filling with organic soil. Silt fencing is typically used on construction sites for erosion control.

We used galvanized roofing, untreated lumber, PVC pipe filled with concrete and bolted to the lumber and roofing.  Then we filled the beds with fill dirt on the bottom then organic soil on top. (As a side note, we also put the silt fence in the corners to help keep the dirt from washing out when watering the veggies, etc. because the galvanized roofing didn’t meet flush in the corners.) James’ dad, Pa Bennie, as he is affectionately known, helped James build the beds and can shovel dirt and pea gravel like a boss. Don’t you just love the sound of pea gravel crunching beneath your feet?  My mom, Gran Gran, as she is affectionately known, is sharing all of her gardening wisdom handed down from years of watching and helping my Papa, a master gardener.  I have so much to learn.  I painted the 2×4’s and PVC with Behr’s Earth Fired Red.

James designed the bean trellis out of PVC pipe which we purchased from Murray Supply in Winston Salem.  I think he did a fantastic job. He will fasten woven fence wire around and over the top with zip ties. I love this picture because you would think we live out in the country. Actually, we live only five minutes from the mall, IF you hit all green lights.

The beautiful pea gravel idea and bean trellis idea came from Pinterest.  You can follow my Pinterest board,  Fifi’s Raised Garden Beds board here.  I have all sorts of ideas pinned regarding raised garden beds. Pinterest is where I get most of my ideas.  Some of which James is all in on, like this one, others not so much.

We have had complete strangers stop and ask us about the garden beds. One gentleman was from Dublin, Ireland. He recently moved to the area and was just driving by.  These beds seem to be a hot topic in the neighborhood.

We still have a few things we want to do. We would like to build a privacy fence. More so to keep out the four legged neighbors than the two legged ones.  We will be adding another trough, probably this weekend, and we plan to add another bed next spring. We have purchased an interesting piece of iron from a salvage yard called Estate of Confusion.  Isn’t that the coolest name?  We just happened to run across this neat little place when we went to Chattanooga a few weeks ago to visit our son and daughter in law. We will incorporate that piece into the garden in an exciting way. Keep your eyes peeled for that addition. Right now we will be focusing on growing organic veggies. Can’t wait for those tomatoes to start coming in.

Do you love to garden? If so, how does your garden grow?

Until we meet again, it’s just an Average Day on Everidge, Fifi
